Bangladesh national team coach is Mushtaq Ahmed
Rangana Herath left Bangladesh during the Test against New Zealand last November. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) tried to get the Lankan great after a few months as he was preferred as a spin bowling coach even though he caught the flight to Australia during the Sylhet Test. Despite offering a contract of 200 days a year, BCB did not agree with Herath in the end.
Ever since Herath’s departure, the post of Bangladesh’s spin bowling coach has been vacant. Bangladesh does not want to play a full series against Sri Lanka without an expert spin bowling coach but against Zimbabwe. The country’s cricket board has appointed a new spin bowling coach ahead of the five-match T20I series against Zimbabwe in May.
Mushtaq Ahmed will work as the spin bowling coach of Bangladesh until the T20 World Cup to be held in the West Indies and the United States. BCB has confirmed the appointment of Pakistan’s former World Cup winning leg spinner in a statement.
Bangladesh will have a preparation camp before playing against Zimbabwe. The 53-year-old former Pakistan leg-spinner will join the camp at the end of this month and start a new role for Bangladesh. Apart from the Zimbabwe series, he will also be Bangladesh’s spin bowling coach for the T20 series against USA.
His contract with Bangladesh will end with the World Cup. Mushtaq has been working as a coach for a long time after quitting the game as a cricketer.
He was England’s spin bowling coach from 2008 to 2014. Mushtaq has the experience of working in the same role for West Indies in 2018-19 season and for Pakistan in 2020-22 season.
The 53-year-old coach was Pakistan’s bowling consultant from 2014 to 2016 after leaving England. This is the first time Mushtaq will work for Bangladesh. He is looking forward to work for Bangladesh. Along with that, he wants to move forward by exchanging his experience with the spinners of Bangladesh.
In this context, Mushtaq said, ‘It is a great honor for me to be a part of Bangladesh cricket as a spin bowling coach. I am looking forward to playing my role and sharing my experience among the cricketers as they all want to learn.
I always believe they are one of the most dangerous teams. They can beat any team because they have that capability, resources and talent. I want to create that trust among them. I am looking forward to working with them.
